What is Acceptance & Commitment Therapy?

If you’re experiencing negative thoughts or worries that prevent you from moving forward, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) could be the key to living a more fulfilling life. Developed as a form of psychotherapy, ACT takes a unique approach to mental health issues, focusing on acceptance and commitment towards your values.

What is ACT?

ACT differs from traditional therapies by not aiming to directly eliminate negative thoughts and feelings. Instead, it helps you develop a healthier relationship with them. Through a variety of techniques, ACT equips you with tools to accept difficult thoughts and emotions without judgment, and choose behaviours that align with your core values – regardless of how you feel in the moment.

ACT has been shown to be effective in treating a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), trauma and PTSD, and even those with chronic pain.

Benefits of ACT

  • Increased Psychological Flexibility: ACT empowers you to respond to life’s challenges with greater adaptability and resilience.
  • Reduced Emotional Reactivity: You learn to detach from unhelpful thought patterns and cultivate a more balanced emotional state.
  • Improved Value-Driven Living: ACT helps you identify what truly matters to you and take action towards a more meaningful life.
  • Enhanced Mindfulness: ACT techniques foster present-moment awareness and acceptance of your inner experience.
