The Transformative Power of Compassion Focused Therapy
In the realm of therapeutic approaches, Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) has been shown to be effective for a number of mental health issues. Originally developed by Professor Paul Gilbert, CFT is rooted in the understanding that cultivating self-compassion and empathy can be transformative in addressing a wide range of issues and enhancing emotional wellbeing. In this blog, we’ve explored how CFT works, and the three connected emotional regulation systems which are harnessed during this therapeutic approach.
The Three Emotional Regulation Systems
At its core, CFT recognises the inherent human capacity for compassion. The therapy explores three interconnected systems – the threat system, drive system, and soothing system – and aims to rebalance these to foster emotional regulation and resilience.
- The Threat System
Responsible for our fight-or-flight response, the threat system can become overactive in individuals struggling with depression. CFT works to redirect this system by encouraging self-compassion. By fostering a kinder and more understanding relationship with oneself, individuals can break free from the cycle of self-criticism and negativity.
- The Drive System
The drive system is associated with goal setting and achievement, driving us towards the things we want or need in order to thrive in life. This system is harnessed during our CFT in Norwich, in order to motivate individuals towards positive change.
- The Soothing System
Often underutilised in those experiencing depression, the soothing system is emphasised in CFT to promote emotional regulation. Techniques such as mindfulness and visualisation are employed to activate the soothing system, fostering a sense of calm and compassion.
