Psychology Practice

Friends are brilliant. They listen, they offer perspective, and sometimes a proper vent over coffee is exactly what a difficult week needs. But there’s a point where informal support stops being enough, and knowing where that line sits isn’t always obvious.

So how do you tell the difference?

When the same conversation keeps happening

If you find yourself telling the same friend the same worry, week after week, without anything shifting, that’s worth noticing. Friends can offer comfort, but they’re not trained to help you work through the underlying pattern. Going in circles is often a sign that something needs more structured attention than a sympathetic ear can provide.

When you’re managing more than you’re saying

Many people downplay how much they’re struggling, particularly with friends they don’t want to burden. If you’re putting on a brave face more often than you’re being honest about how you feel, that gap between what you show and what you’re carrying is exactly the sort of thing therapy is built to address.

When it starts affecting daily life

Trouble sleeping, difficulty concentrating, avoiding situations you used to manage fine. These are signals that whatever you’re dealing with has moved beyond something conversation alone can resolve.

What taking that step actually involves.

Starting therapy isn’t as daunting as it sounds. A clinical psychologist will usually begin with an assessment to understand your situation and what you’d like to get from sessions. From there, therapy can draw on evidence-based approaches such as CBT, ACT or CFT, tailored to what’s actually going on for you, whether that’s anxiety, stress, or something less easy to name.

You don’t need a crisis to justify getting support. Wanting things to feel better is reason enough.
